Chemical Facility Fire Cleanup

With a proven track record in effective response to some of our nation’s greatest disasters, SWS Environmental Services is a leader in the emergency response industry. SWS was called to assist in extinguishing a catastrophic fire at a chemical facility. After the fire was put out, SWS immediately went to work to stabilize the situation. Crews were onsite 24 hours a day for 3-4 weeks, performing onsite identification of wastes, solidification, and neutralization of the onsite chemicals. We also began the waste characterization process.

The customer had an estimated 750,000 gallons of 114 chemical products onsite at the time of the fire, stored in seven tanks as well as numerous drums, intermodal and tote containers. No fewer than a dozen disposal companies were presented with profiles for what ended up being more than 30 different waste streams. As shipping and disposal arrangements were being made, SWS was onsite, managing the day-to-day activity necessary before the material could be moved responsibly. This included scheduling, paperwork preparation, labeling, loading, etc. Within 11 days of being on the job, profiles were approved and waste was transferred to DOT shippable containers for shipment

Over the next three months, nine different transportation companies brought in 235 Roll Off Containers and 138 Frac Tanks to haul 1500 shipments to a half-dozen different disposal locations. Disposal methods ranged from deep well injection, landfill, fuels blending, incineration and product recycling. The leadership of SWS helped ensure that all the chemicals were handled safely, quickly, and effectively.
